Shannon Price
If there are two qualities most important for Science Theatre members, they are a love for science and a passion for sharing it with others through teaching. No one exhibits these traits better than Science Theatre's Member of the Month for November, 2009: Shannon Price.
Shannon's own experiences illustrate the purpose of Science Theatre, to encourage interest in science through interactive demonstration. She writes, "My fondest childhood memories are of when my mom and dad would do science experiments with me in the kitchen. It inspired me to pursue a career in science. I want other kids to be inspired like I was." She explains that Science Theatre gives her the opportunity to give a new generation that same experience: "I like teaching the kids something new. I like watching their eyes light up." Shannon hopes to bring a Science Theatre performance to her old elementary school.
In just the past month, Shannon has made two performances with Science Theatre and contributed to special projects and social outings. Shannon performed the Polymer Milk Jug demonstration of thermoplasticity for the approximately 200 attendees of Science Theatre's Halloween Show at MSU's Abrams Planetarium on October 30th and performed the Predator-Prey demonstration of natural selection at Herbison Woods Elementary School in DeWitt on November 19th. She writes of her experience at Herbison Woods, "it went very well, the kids were smiling, it was just an awesome day." Shannon has added four demonstration writeups to Science Theatre's online documentation database and participated in the Science Theatre laser tag social on November 15th.
Shannon is a Freshman Zoology major from Center Line, MI. After graduating from MSU, she intends to research rattlesnakes in the United States.
